Kedington Horticultural Show
Saturday 4th September @ Kedington Church
The Kedington Horticultural show challenges all the gardeners and cooks of Kedington to bring their best fruit, veg, flowers, pot plants, preserves and baking to compete in this annual contest.
Apart from the date details for the 2010 Contest have yet to be announced but until further details are announce here are the details and schedule of classes from '09 so you can get growing:
Entries for all categories (A schedule of which is below) can be left at the church between 9:00 and 11:15 AM
Public Viewing begins at 2:00pm and refreshments will be available (Not may not eat the exhibits at this time)
Exhibits can be collected by their owner at 3:30pm sharp, however any not collected at that time will be auctioned at 4:00pm with proceeds going to the church fund.
Rules
- All entries must be grown in the parish of Kedington or by Kedington Church Worshippers or by members of Kedington Garden Society.
- Cost = 10p per Entry.
- Points will be awarded as follows: 1st=5 points, 2nd=3 points, 3rd=1 point. All Winners will receive prize cards.
- The Keddy Trophy will be awarded to the exhibitor with the most points.
- The Les Moulton Trophy will be awarded to the exhibit which the Judges decide is the best in show in the horticultural section.
- The Barbara Moulton Trophy will be awarded to the exhibit which the Judges decide is the best in show in the culinary section.
- The Jeannie Lee Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the winner of Class 8 in the flower section (1 Container of 6 stems of Mixed Garden Flowers.)
The Schedule of classes
VEGETABLES & FRUIT
- 1 6 runner beans on a plate
- 2 3 beetroot, trimmed and tied
- 3 6 carrots, long pointed, trimmed - any variety
- 4 6 onions, trimmed and tied
- 5 4 tomatoes on a plate, for quality
- 6 6 cherry tomatoes on a plate, for quality
- 7 4 potatoes, white, on a plate
- 8 4 potatoes, coloured, on a plate
- 9 heaviest potato
- 10 6 small shallots, (diameter not to exceed 1 inch) arranged on a plate
- 11 6 large shallots (over 1” diameter) arranged on a plate
- 12 heaviest marrow
- 13 the longest stick of rhubarb
- 14 4 courgettes on a plate
- 15 heaviest onion
- 16 longest runner bean
- 17 a collection of 6 vegetables. The number of each kind shall be as in the individual classes (eg if you are including corn, there should be 2 cobs; courgettes, there should be 4).
- 18 3 vegetables (all the same) of any kind not otherwise specified in the schedule.
- 19 1 cabbage, for quality
- 20 4 kinds of culinary herbs, named, in a container of water
- 21 3 dessert apples, on a plate
- 22 3 cooking apples, on a plate
- 23 6 dessert plums, on a plate
- 24 3 dessert pears
FLOWERS
- 1 1 rose, any variety
- 2 1 container of 6 single asters
- 3 1 container of 6 double asters
- 4 1 container of 6 different annual flowers
- 5 1 container of dahlias, 3 blooms
- 6 1 bowl of floating flower heads (diameter of bowl not to exceed 9”)
- 7 container of 3 gladioli
- 8 1 container of 6 stems of mixed garden flowers
- 9 1 container of 3 stems of one variety of flowering shrub
- 10 a green arrangement, to include grasses
POT PLANTS
- 1 1 fuchsia, bush or pyramid
- 2 1 foliage plant
- 3 1 African violet
- 4 1 pelargonium
- 5 1 flowering pot plant (not otherwise classified in Schedule)
- 6 1 cactus or succulent (named)
CHILDREN’S CLASSES (for children up to 12 years of age)
- 1 garden arrangement on a saucer
- 2 flower arrangement in a yogurt pot
- 3 bunch of 6 radishes
- 4 funniest shape vegetable or fruit
- 5 3 decorated biscuits
- 6 A home-made and decorated card
CULINARY
- 1 Chocolate sponge with filling (any recipe, not iced)
- 2 6 cheese scones (own recipe)
- 3 8 cheese straws
- 4 1 lb loaf of bread (white flour)
- 5 4 jam tarts
- 6 Apple pie on a plate
PRESERVES
- 1 Small jar of home-made apple sauce
- 2 Jar of fruit jam
- 3 Jar of marmalade
