The the beginning of the game was a quiet affair but the peace was broken after half an hour when Sporting 77 broke down the left for a far post cross which cut out the keeper while the ball was headed home from close range. Kedington struck back immediately when a diving save from the keeper was parried to Matt Hart who tucked the ball away for the equaliser. With the bit between their teeth Kedington were in front within a minute, as the Sporting 77 keeper tried to keep a deflected shot from going out of play but only managed to give the ball to Sean Johnson who set up Tom Rogers to drive the ball into the roof of the net.
Not for the first time this season half time broke Kedington's stride and they began the second half in the same lack lustre fashion as they had begun the first half. Again the hosts took advantage with a cross from the right finding the corner of the net for the equaliser. This time one goal would not be enough to rouse Kedington and it was not until a simple break through the middle put Sporting 77 ahead that Kedington found what it took to up the play and put pressure on 77's goal. It wasn't until the final few minutes that Kedington got the chance they needed when a corner fell to Lee Phillips who struck his shot low into the bottom corner to make it 3-3. This is not the first time Kedington have left it till late on in the game to pull back from behind, but this is a dangerous tactic when all three points from the match are so important, because you can never be certain you will have time to put the winner away. Kedington found this out to their cost in the last minute of the game as Lee Phillips sent a shot straight and true towards the goal only to see the potential winner deflected by the Sporting 77 keeper to go just wide of the post.
Kedington FC will be disappointed to see Rayne slipping 2 points further ahead at the top of the league, but can comfort themselves with the knowledge that Sporting 77 have only been beaten the once all season on their home turf and meanwhile Kedington have pulled clear of Belchamps to claim the second place spot all for their own.
Kedington must now turn their attention to the coming Saturday where they get to prove themselves directly against their Rayne rivals in the Challenge Cup 2nd Round. When Rayne came here in October we claimed a strong 4-2 win but now our boys must face them on Rayne territory. They will need to be on form from the off this time.
